The SJII MedServe Program helps high school students become global health leaders. They learn to promote health equity in communities facing tough conditions. Students get certified training in basic medical skills like measuring blood pressure and blood glucose. The program also teaches about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes, which are common in these communities. Students use these skills daily during service work in places like Tondo or Chiang Mai. They conduct screenings, help with clinics, set up health fairs, and organize health education. Completing the program can also count towards an IB CAS Project or Extended Essay. This is a direct service CCA.
CAS Strand: Service
Students will acquire knowledge and skills through the CCA, which they will then use to go and work with our partner communities in Tondo or Chiang Mai, health inequity disproportionally affects the communities.
Lasallian Principles: Quality Education
During this CCA students will have to achieve a standard of skill, which they must approach with a mindset of excellence. They will be working directly with our partner communities to help improve the health and well-being of members of the communities. Thus, this CCA also links to the Lasallian valued of Service and Community. the goal of UNSDG 3 is to "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". Our students will be working with our partners to address the non-communicable diseases, which affect people that live in poverty, much more than others. The goal of UNSDG 10 is to "Reduce inequality within and among countries". The communities our students will be working live severely below the poverty line and therefore do not have access to preventative healthcare that can sustain a quality of health. This CCA plans to bridge the gap, reducing the inequality.
