Competition Mathematics

Competition Mathematics

Competition Mathematics involves using a student's knowledge and skill in a creative way to solve problems. While it obviously requires a knowledge of mathematics, it is not geared towards having a student improve his/her ability in syllabus Mathematics (other activities do that). However, doing competition Mathematics will help to develop a student's understanding of mathematical principles and strategies. Students are not required to enter competitions (although most do) and the emphasis is on the fun and satisfaction of dealing with more complex problems than the familiar ones found in textbooks. Throughout the activity students share their ideas and solutions with each other as they tackle age/skill-appropriate questions.

CAS Strand: Creativity

Although not generally recognised, Mathematics is a highly creative subject. The ability to apply complex, abstract concepts and principles is a very important part of a students intellectual development and the notion of a mathematical proof/demonstration/solution is one that is not found in any other discipline.

Lasallian Principles: Faith in the Presence of God

God is a Mathematician.
