Have you ever wondered how we can better support our fellow domestic workers in Singapore, and more specifically the domestic helpers that live in many of our own homes? Project Connect works with Aidha, a non-profit organisation based in Singapore, to do just that.
Our service project aims to empower female domestic workers in Singapore through English proficiency, financial literacy, and direct conversations, allowing them to feel more welcomed and comfortable in what may feel like a foreign environment.
One of the most exciting projects we work on every term is our podcast called “Inspired by Her” – where we find domestic helpers and their employers, having conversations with them so that people can learn more about their story. We continue to run events in school every year, ensuring that we can be the voice for domestic workers in the school.
We aim to, because we should, ensure that these MDWs are given a place in our communities. If you have any enquiries, feel free to reach out to project.connect@sji-international.com.sg!
CAS Strand: Service and Creativity.
Being in Project Connect means you are able to put your educational skills to good use, and members are given several opportunities to not only volunteer in Aidha’s modules (where they actually teach on Sundays!) but also to develop their own modules based on the demand and needs of MDWs in Singapore. (i.e. Chinese Language courses were recently in demand)
Lasallian Principles:
Concern for the Poor and Social Justice/Quality education: Everyone is entitled to education, and so through our fundraisers, advocacy statements and direct involvement, we fight for the right that MDWs too should have access to learn more about topics such as financial literacy and English language.
Inclusive Community & Respect for All Persons: Working with and supporting MDWs in Singapore not just to empower them but also to welcome them allows us to realise that the community we form not just in our country, but worldwide, is so much bigger than we think it is.
