Botanical CLub

Botanical Club

The CCA will teach students about organic gardening with an emphasis on sustainability and service. This is an active CCA where student do a variety of tasks in the garden. The emphasis is on growing vegetables and other plants and learning how to maintain a garden. There is also a service component as students grow vegetables and raise money for charities supported by the school.

CAS Strand: Creativity

This CCA allows the students to participate in the growing of the school garden. Students will develop the skills and knowledge to create small gardens and ecosystems in the designated areas. Students will also create vegetable beds based on their knowledge of the respective plants. Creating gardens is a complicated process so students will have to develop numerous skills in order to effectively create a thriving garden and natural ecosystem.

There is also a green wall project where students will plan out how to grow the green wall that was started in the first term of 2022. Students will also develop their creative skills in mapping out the garden (which was also started in the first term of 2022) and creating various ways to sell the grown vegetables in order to raise money for the schools preferred charities.

Lasallian Principles: Quality education and Respect for All Persons (and the natural world)

Engagement in this CCA also supports the Lasallian principle of a quality education. Working in the garden brings balance to students lives and is fundamental to SJII’s holistic approach to education. This CCA will encourage students to learn about growth cycle of plants. They will also learn how to grow vegetables from seed , maintain and harvest these vegetables within a sustainable natural ethos. Students learn to respect each other while working together. but in this CCA they also learn to respect nature which is a core principle of all faiths. Sustainability is a fair and just approach to the natural world. Students also sell vegetables and provide funding for charities which the school supports. This is in line of the service aspect of Lasallian values.
