Sport

Sport is an integral the SJII CCA program and aims to develop the potential in each and every student.

Our goal is to involve, excite and motivate students to participate in a range of physical activities to discover their hidden passions and talents.

SJII's overriding approach to sport at school is to encourage all students to “give it a go” regardless of their skill level, and to strive for their personal best.

The program also supports secondary students' CAS requirements, thanks to its close alignment with the Activity Strand.

The program consists of competitive and non-competitive sporting activities to encourage participation, individual aspiration, team achievement, and personal excellence.

It is through sport that students learn to embrace challenges and overcome physical barriers.

Sport also provides pertinent opportunities for lessons about leadership, teamwork, victory and defeat, and the joy of competition.

We offer a range of core games, e.g. football, netball, rugby, touch, cricket, volleyball, badminton, and basketball, balanced with a diverse range of sports such as swimming, martial arts, and climbing.

The majority of Sport CCAs at SJII are organised and run by SJII faculty. While the majority of coaches are members of the PE Department, a range of teachers across the secondary school are passionate and experienced coaches. All coaches have recognised qualifications and a track record of success.

Training sessions take place during the week both before and after school.

Students involved in sporting CCAs also have the opportunity to represent the school in competitions within Singapore and abroad.

Sports on offer include basketball, football, rugby, volleyball, cricket, netball, swimming and martial arts.

Representative Sport

With over 50 teams each year competing in the ACSIS conference, in addition to other tournaments, there are extensive opportunities for all.

Selected squads represent the school in regional conferences, which offers students the exciting and enriching experience of competing across Asia and beyond.

A large number of SJII students also compete at the Singapore National Games representing the school in canoeing, athletics, swimming, fencing, taekwondo, bowling and shooting.

Competitive sport has a high profile at SJII because of the value it adds to our educational program.

ACSIS Seasons

Throughout the year sporting opportunities during CCA seasons often align with the corresponding ACSIS seasons. As such, not all genders and ages will be able to play particular sports in both CCA seasons. Though, where possible recreational and training opportunities are offered when coaches and facilities allow.

Paid and Unpaid CCAs

While the majority of sports CCAs are unpaid and free for students, there are some where participants will incur a cost. This is due to the need to engage external experienced coaches and/or book community facilities.

Throughout the two CCA seasons, some activities may be both paid and unpaid. This is due to alignment with the competitive ACSIS seasons and the school's two fixed CCA terms.

For example:

  • In term one participants in the under 19 boys tennis CCA incur a cost for the weekly training sessions facilitated by experienced external coaches as it is 'out of the ACSIS season'. In this way it is similar to the charge that would be incurred if students engaged a coach from the community independently.

  • In term two however, when the under 19 boys tennis players are both training and representing the school in the ACSIS competition, the cost of the coach is covered by the school in recognition of the significant commitment and talent of participants.
