Gamelan

Gamelan

This activity provides the opportunity for students to learn Balinese gong kebyar gamelan. a traditional Balinese percussion musical instruments. The set that we have in SJI International is hand-crafted with beautiful carving by prominent gamelan maker in Bali. Through this activity, students will experience a different way of performing music from what they are used to. In playing gamelan, musicians need to use their listening skills and exercise close collaboration to create beautiful and harmonious music that is enchanting completely without a conductor and a musical score. In Singapore, there are only four gong kebyar Balinese gamelan sets. Don't miss this rare opportunity to learn about the culture of others and appreciate it. Students will also have the opportunity to perform in school and hopefully outside school.

CAS Strand: Creativity

Balinese gong kebyar set consists of various instruments. In this activity, members will have the opportunity to learn to play many of them and produce Balinese music which is vibrant, charming and soothing. The Balinese gamelan is one of the prides of our school as it shows that we care not only for the Western musical instruments that we are familiar with but we also make an effort to learn and understand the culture of this region. Performances will be held in school and outside school if we have the opportunity. In the past, before Covid 19, we played at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, in other schools and the Republic Polytechnic. The gamelan also accompanies spectacular Balinese dance.
