Students will be thrust deep into the world of astronomy. Beginning with basic concepts such as the solar system, the spacetime continuum, and constellations, participants are gradually exposed to difficult and advanced astronomy topics such as stellar life cycles, the evolution of the universe, introductory particle physics, black holes, and more. At the end of the course, participants will have familiarised themselves with astronomy knowledge enough to confidently last them through the IGCSE (and possibly IB) astronomy syllabus.
Each session will begin with an interactive lecture introducing a new topic. During the lecture, participants will be asked revision questions or will be immersed in hands-on activities. After the content-heavy portion of the session is over, a revision activity, such as a Kahoot or a presentation, will be used to reinforce the important focal points of the lesson.
CAS Strand: Creativity
During the sessions, participants will be consistently presented with the opportunity to design infographics and slideshows which they will present to the rest to showcase their learning. In addition, in the “Constellations” lesson, participants will be asked to create and share their legends and stories surrounding constellations and asterisms, cultivating their imagination. Furthermore, I will frequently highlight new and recent discoveries made in astronomy, which will mature students’ interests in current affairs and encourage them to consistently read the news. Finally, by joining the AstroAlliance sessions, participants will nurture their passion and curiosity about astronomy, thereby encouraging them to join astronomical societies and clubs outside of school, visit planetaria, and share their passion with their peers and family members.
Lasallian Principles: Inclusive Community and Quality Education
Inclusive Community: AstroAlliance participants will work collaboratively during games, presentations, and hands-on practical tasks, thus forming an inclusive community.
Quality Education: Students will dive into an astronomy syllabus that delves into far more detail than astronomy chapters formally taught in science lessons. As a result, this CCA will be a venue for astronomy education of the highest quality. To ensure that the sessions deliver accurate information, all facts taught during the lessons will be extensively reviewed beforehand.
