Riding For the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled Association is an international organisation that combines the use of horses with physical and emotional therapy for children for free for the children's families.

CAS Strand: Service

This service group have identified a community need, specifically for therapeutic support for people with disabilities. Through this CCA students support riders with receiving this effective practice in a way that meets this need.

Lasallian Principles: Respect for all Persons

By engaging in this CCA, students will work with people with physical discomfort, intellectual challenges and learning needs in a way that promotes respect and dignity for these people while at the same time fostering positive and meaningful relationships with members of our extended community.

Student Testimonial: This service CCA is a very interesting service learning CCA. I volunteer for CCA twice a week. We head to the RDA Centre just somewhere infront of the school. The session is 2hrs. We start at 3.30pm and end at 5.30pm. We are assigned to a horse, a leader who guides the horse and a rider. These riders have disabilities like autism, down syndrome, visual impairment and more. We have to know what their disabilities are and work with them while they are riding the horse. The leader is in-charge of guiding the horse while the side walkers like me protect the rider from falling off or hurting the horse and engaging him or her with activities. Through this service learning opportunity, I learnt how to work with others with different needs from me, like how to handle a child which is visually impaired or with development coordination dysfunction. This has involved being sensitive and supportive to riders with a range of specific needs. I have to respond sensitively and supportively to these children. I really believe that this CCA will help students to improve their communication and socialising skills with the people working there. They will then be able to use these skills in the workforce in future.
