Led by dance teachers from EV Dance, students will be exposed to a range of hip-hop dance techniques and choreography supported by contemporary rhythmic music.
Hip hop dance is a style of street dance that evolved from hip hop culture and hip hop music. It borrows elements from a number of different styles like African dance, tap, and ballet. It is often known and recognised for its improvisation of dancers, freestyle techniques and 'battles' performed by hip hop 'crews'.
CAS Strand: Creativity
Hip Hop Dancing encourages students to express themselves by following the choreography of the instructor as well as creating and performing their own 'dance moves'. By engaging with hip hop music, culture and dance students will develop a greater understanding of this subculture, its history, and modes of self-expression. With more upbeat music, hip-hop dance is considered to foster a fun and creative platform when compared to more traditional styles of dance.
Lasallian Principles: Quality Education, Respect for All Persons
By engaging in dance, students are developing their talents and skills outside of the classroom. The Lasallian principle of a quality education helps facilitate learning opportunities that allow students to take ownership for their learning and prepare them for the future. Dance as a form of self expression encourages students to be comfortable in themselves, take risks and be confident when performing or placed in group situations.
By learning about the history and origins of hip hop dancing, students will also develop a greater respect for all people. Hip hop culture developed in the 1970s in primarily African communities in America. Students will be exposed to concepts like appropriation and different hip hop styles to better understand the style, its popularity and attraction to people across the globe.
