Chemistry Olympiad

Chemistry Olympiad

The general aims of the Chemistry Olympiad CCA are to: (i) promote an interest in Chemistry at SJI-International, beyond the IB curriculum, (ii) provide an opportunity for academically inclined Grade-11 students to develop investigation/research skills, stimulate new learning, and spar against each other, (iii) support a team of students who are talented in the Chemistry discipline to represent SJI-I in the Singapore Chemistry Olympiad (SChO), with a goal to earn an invitation to the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).

CAS Strand: Creativity

Students striving to develop scientific explanations related to topics in advanced chemistry will exercise creativity during the Chemistry Olympiad CCA. Through exposure to a range of real-world applications, students will extend their basic understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and be confronted with misconceptions. Complex problem-solving exercises will challenge students to revisit assumptions that typically facilitate computations and evaluate the validity of approximations in a range of applications. In many examples, exceptions and anomalies will be investigated as free-flowing exercises intended to promote creative problem-solving strategies.

Lasallian Principles: Quality Education

Engagement in this CCA supports the Lasallian principle of a quality education. The Chemistry Olympiad CCA will encourage students to work cooperatively discovering and nurturing critical thinking skills whilst building new knowledge related to a broad range of scientific disciplines.
