Middle School Debating

Middle School Debating (Grades 6 and 7)

This CCA allows students from grade 6 in the Elementary School and Grade 7 in the High School to rekindle old and build new relationships, develop debating skills and engage in friendly competition.

Students will learn how to debate by partaking in a range of impromptu and planned activities to develop their speaking skills and confidence. There will of course be some planned debates to test out these new skills

CAS Strand: Creativity

During CCA sessions students will engage with topics usually connected to contemporary issued or global affairs. Students will then be provided with a statement/idea that they need to support or oppose. Drawing upon their own knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills students need to think on their feet and compose an argument supported by examples and evidence in addition to refuting the claims made by the opposition.

Interesting debate topics may include:

  • This House would punish parents for crimes committed by their children

  • This House would ban zoos and

  • This House believes that celebrities should receive harsher punishments than ordinary people
