Academic Journal @SJII

The SJII Academic Journal CCA provides a supportive space for students to express their interests beyond what the curriculum teaches. Students at SJII have a wide array of knowledge, passions and interests that they may want to explore in the future, and the SJII Academic Journal CCA acts as a way for them to publish their findings and research in those fields. These fields can be anything from astronomy to law that aren't cultivated by other CCAs or subjects at SJII.

Students who join this CCA will gain a multitude of skills that will help them for the rest of their time at SJII, including but not limited to Research, Formal Writing and Critical Thinking. Additionally, if groups of students wish to embark as a group on their research they will gain important intrapersonal skills including communication, teamwork and leadership. Finally, students will be exposed to the writing process that comes with great scrutiny from the editorial cycle to create a professional and educational text.

CAS Strand: Creativity and Service

The SJII Academic Journal is aligned with the creativity strand as it enables students to “explore their own sense of original thinking and expression” which is often bound down by the school curriculum and the lack of co-curricular activities in certain fields. Additionally, it allows students to broaden their view of the world after researching areas continually relevant at the global scale and understand their impacts by harnessing an unconventional way of thinking. Students will be exposed to the creative process of writing and will produce a final product that is published on a website.

This CCA will be helpful to the school community as it will expose the student population to a range of different areas that will assist them in making choices for future career paths. This is a major issue in our school as many students even in higher grades are unsure of what they wish to pursue in the future. This CCA will guide them to make this decision. Further more once sufficient progress is made, it can act as an online catalogue for students to use for research and general reading which serves as a medium for them to expand their knowledge.

Lasallian Principles: Quality Education

The Academic journal allows students to explore areas of study they are interested in that are not taught as part of the school curriculum. The student is encouraged to formulate and defend their own opinions on broad, challenging prompts on a variety of topics. Instead of being constrained to a strict format and writing structure, students are free to explore a range of opinions and schools of thought. The students build critical thinking skills and are challenged to develop opinions of their own instead of defending what they have read or learned from the works of experts.
