The Chinese Movie Appreciation CCA provides an engaging and culturally enriching platform for students to explore Chinese language and culture through film. Students engage with curated Mandarin-language films to develop advanced auditory comprehension and expand contextual vocabulary across diverse themes. By participating in this CCA, students will gain confidence in understanding spoken Mandarin, acquire practical vocabulary for expressing opinions, develop a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture and storytelling and build communication skills in a supportive and interactive environment.
CAS Strand: Creativity
The CCA aligns with the creativity strand . Students will not only watch and discuss Chinese films, but also actively create original and interpretive products inspired by the movies they study. These activities encourage imaginative thinking, personal expression, communication, and the development of new skills. Examples include:
-Producing short films or skits inspired by themes or scenes from movies
-Creating alternative endings
-Writing film reviews, blogs, or reflection pieces in English and/or Mandarin
-Producing podcasts or video essays analyzing cinematography, themes, and cultural elements
-Designing promotional posters or subtitles for selected films
Through these creative outputs, students explore and extend ideas gained from authentic Chinese media into meaningful products and performances, directly supporting the IB CAS Creativity strand.
Lasallian Principles: Respect for all persons, Inclusive Community and Quality Education
Respect for All Persons
Through the exploration of Chinese films, students are exposed to diverse perspectives, traditions, and social experiences within Chinese-speaking communities. By discussing cultural themes, characters, and values presented in the films, students learn to appreciate different viewpoints and develop empathy and respect for people from backgrounds different from their own. The CCA creates a safe and supportive environment where students are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions respectfully.
Inclusive Community
The CCA brings together students from different grade levels and language abilities in a collaborative and interactive setting. Through group discussions, creative projects, and shared cultural experiences, students build meaningful connections and support one another in their learning journey. The club promotes a sense of belonging by encouraging participation from all students, regardless of their proficiency in Mandarin.
Quality Education
The CCA provides students with an engaging and authentic way to develop language and communication skills beyond the classroom. By learning through film, students strengthen their listening, critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural understanding in a meaningful context. The incorporation of creative and reflective activities also encourages students to become active learners who can apply their knowledge in original and thoughtful ways.
